THE ROLE OF PRIVATE SECURITY ORGANIZATIONS ON NATIONAL SECURITY

Abstract

Private security organizations (PSOs) have become indispensable actors in the contemporary security architecture of states, especially in developing nations such as Nigeria where public law enforcement agencies are overstretched. As non-state actors, PSOs complement the efforts of government security institutions in protecting lives, property, and critical infrastructure. However, their growing influence raises important questions regarding regulation, accountability, professionalism, and coordination within the broader framework of national security. This paper critically examines the role of private security organizations in enhancing national security in Nigeria, with reference to comparative experiences from other countries. Using both theoretical and empirical perspectives, it discusses their contributions, challenges, and implications for sustainable security governance. The study concludes that while Private security organizations (PSOs) significantly reduce the burden on public security institutions, effective regulation, training, and partnership frameworks are essential to maximize their impact.
